The axle nut is one of those nuts where the threads on the outside or
"top"are essentially made at a different pitch than the threads on the
inside or "bottom" of the nut. So when you tighten it down, the inteference
fit locks it in place. However, that stretches the threads and surrounding
metal a bit. Backing the nut off again relaxes the nut even more, so trying
to reuse it, you don't have the same interference fit you had before, and
so you don't get the safetty benefit of the locking action.

However, judicious application of a ball-peen hammer restores the nut
to "like-new" condition, and ready to be reused.

*Never* bought new nuts for the Coupe GT, had the driveshafts out 3
times, banged on the nut and replaced it every time. And the way I
drove that car from 1991 to 1997, if a nut was going to come loose,
it would have done so.

However, YMMV, etc... -doug q
