Naah, it isn't quite that bad to get at.

If you are dexterious and have small fingers, you can do it from the
outside of the car without removing the inside trim panel. (You DO,
however, have to open the door. Darn, only one moving part!)

Remove chrome strip - slide a knife blade under it about in the middle,
lift gently, and it will pop out on one end or the other - don't bend it!

remove screw at front of door handle, two screws at rear of handle (just
inside door), wiggle assembly outward - DON'T PULL or the nylon retainers
will pop off - squirt some WD-40 on the retainers, THEN gently pop them
off. Pay attention to which is which - one is the latch, the other is the
lock - don't mix 'em.

To quote Mr. Bentley, assembly is the reverse, etc.

One BIG, SERIOUS advantage to removing the door panel is that you can lube
those expensive, fragile window motors and their mickey mouse cable and
pulley mechanism - also you can tighten up all the various hardware that
has loosened over the years. Make sure you get ALL the screws and fasteners
out before you start tugging on the plastic door panel - they are not very
sturdy.
