It's not a quattro if it's got a 4-cylinder engine.

Well, there is basically no glaring weak points in the late 4000s.
Just ddo the standard checks for used cars...  Make sure that the car
has been well maintained.  My aunt has a 86 4000S 1.8 and it has been
quite reliable.  The only things needed attention were mufflers, brake
pads and rotors, tires, a slightly leaky fuel regulator, and trunk shocks,
