I see the Antipodes have already replied with exactly what I was thinking -
oval bores.  A leakdown test on the engine when cold and with each
piston in turn down at BDC seems to be called far.  If it is oval bores,
then the engine will have to be rebored for oversize pistons - these
are freely available and fairly cheap for the 2144cc engines, but
exactly the opposite for the 2226cc.  At this stage in the game, a
secondhand engine from a rear-ended wreck would seem the way to go.

Has the engine been driven hard before it was properly warmed up?
