Bosch Motronic modification: howto?

Hi!

Warning: probably silly question coming up, but I'm
curious to learn how this is and can be done.

Subject: modifying Bosch Motronic fuel/ignition/boost
         management systems for Audi/Porsche and others
         using the system.

I'd like to know who on the list makes upgraded computers
for motronic equipped cars. I know how to go about
updating boost and ignition tables for the cars equipped
with the hitachi MAC units thanks to help from listers.
But I would like to learn how to go about upgrading the
Bosch units that would normally come with later Audi
cars (later 200, the S4 ...) and Porsche, Volvo and others.
Forming new timing tables can be done using a dyno, and
has been done and placed onto a Hitachi MAC unit I've
seen.

How did the modifiers on this list learn how to do mods
to the Motronic units? Does Bosch release information
regarding doing this? I know there are books out that
talk about the different Bosch fueling and ignition
control systems, but I'm not sure they'd talk about
changing timing maps and the like.

Where to start learning?
