See my previous post on this matter.  Don't second guess the engineers.  
They know what they're doing usually.

It would not be easier to use.  Even a poorly calibrated auto system is 
much better than a manual system.

That was Delco BTW, and that was a loooong time ago.  In that day, it was 
state-of-the-art.  When the '86 vintage HVAC system is running as 
designed, it works very well.  I find it controls temperature very well, 
and it is reasonably quiet with more than adequate airflow.  Its only 
when the system breaks down that it fails to control temperature.
