Re: ANOTHER ONE bites the dust!

Darin,

Are you sure it is the tranny? Does the whine occur in every gear?
Most trannies I've seen fail, lock out a particular gear. Usually
fifth gear because of the lower ratio causes the gears to pull apart.
Thus putting more wear on the tranny, the higher ratios compress the
gears (not drive gears, gears as in metal toothed gears). Also the
tranny has to be held in to gear for the lower ones (it'll pop out
otherwise).

The whine could be the center differential. Or you could simply be
low on tranny fluid due to seal leaks.

Anyway, you have a couple of options. Sell the car to an unsuspecting
buyer (question of morality). Keep driving the car until the tranny
completely fails, then with the money you've been saving buy a new one.
If your not locked out of any gears, the tranny could last a *long* time
before you need a new one.

Oh, I have an '83 suburban for sale! A little rusty, but otherwise runs
fine. 2WD, 1/2 ton, king of the road...asking a couple grand. I need
to sell it because I'm leaving Iowa!!!

Hope things look up!

chris
