DRLs on the out?

I just happened to note the subtext on a recent GMC Truck commercial stated
that vehicles manufactured after a certain date were not being equipped with
DRLs.  I must say that I can't wait to hear that Saturn has adopted the same
policy!  Does anyone know the whys and wherefores?  Are DRLs being phased
out in the US?  Was it that the added complexity caused higher failure rates
and they weren't that popular?  

... could it be that they found that the DRL headlamps not running at full
brightness was jamming some LASER speed guns? ... :)
