You can take a peek at www.kustomsignals.com/index.html to read
about their portable radar and lidar units. Kustom Signals, Inc. is
the leading supplier of police lidar equipment. A few interesting
features of the ProLaser II one of their more popular laser gun thingies:

  The IR beam circle is 3.5' at 1000'.
  The unit has an adjustable range window.
  There is a distance measurement feature.
  It will operate through a windshield (presumably
    at greatly reduced sensitivity).
  It has selectable direction - toward or away.
  It has a tracking tone and keeps some tracking history
    to demonstrate (to the courts) valid target acquisition.

This device appears to address, to some degree, a number
of the limitations frequently cited by detractors.

Don't bother to bite on the button which says "Got a
Speeding Ticket? Click Here." Personally, I couldn't
resist the opportunity to be insulted.
