Didn't see if anyone answered the second question.

BSE is Bovine Spongiform Ecepahal....? or Mad Cow Disease. BIG deal in the
UK, since they had the unfortunate habit of grinding up the bits of dead
(sick) cows and making them into animal feed. Theory is the "prions" (new
theoretical infectious agent) are not destroyed by normal methods. Very
scary to some, since another theory is it can cause a similar disease in
humans (CKJ?). Let's just say that since I travel to the UK on business
every now and then, I'm very happy to have been a non red-meat-eater for
the last ten years.

On the other hand, you can tell a Brit that you'd like to "knock his
daughter up in the morning" and he won't slug you.... :-)
