Really, look at the actual hp/weight ratio on that Miata.  lets suppose
that's a nicely built Ford V8 at 300hp.  That's roughly 8 pounds per hp. 
That is an equation that will produce very good acceleration numbers, but
certainly not a suicide machine unless they really screwed up the handling
(not too likely asthe Ford 302 is only slightly heavier than the Miata
4-banger.) Try driving a car with under 5 pounds per hp.  That starts to
get scary, but still very controllable if you keep your head on straight.
