Phil,
We had this on our  4K a year ago. If you get 12V on the signal wire when
the key goes in "start", it cannot be the switch --- that wire draws little
current. I put in a new starter and replaced the high current starter
wiring, that solved the problem. If the replacement solenoid has two signal
pins --- do NOT assume they are the same. Parts people told me so, and
imagine my surprise after everything was put back together and was still
dead. Switching the control wire onto the other pin solved it.
