Runnin rough. Whats wrong???

Hey everyone, my 85 coupe gt is runnin real rough if I try to
accelerate hard.  If I give it too much gas it wants to die.  I was
thinking that the timing could be off cause the car is ticking.  So I
think I might need to replace the timing belt.  Could that be it?  Or
if it isnt, what could be causing this problem?  Thanks everyone.
