Running on empty - wacky gage

Every 80s vintage Audi and VW product owned (5) never shows 'full' on 
the gage after a fill-up. It seems like they are programmed to function 
correctly for the first couple of years and then only show 3/4 after you 
fill up.   Does any one know of an 'easy fix', or will my wife have to 
continue panicking every time the fuel gage is in the red, but we still 
have a 1/4 tank?
