Pete's 4kQ turbo woes

After fixing the broken valve, we are trying to get Pete Kunzler's
car running again. It is extremely difficult to start...

Before the teardown, compression was good apart from the cylinder with
the broken valve. Now compression is bad - 75 to 110.
What could have happened? Current theory is something to do with the
lifters, but what? There isn't any clicking.

Engine is timed correctly. When it runs, the timing light shows
a few degrees of advance at idle - which is correct.
Fool pressure is OK, if a little low at 80psi. Air meter plate
moves.

Mixture leans over time (as observed by frequency valve duty cycle
readings increasing).

On one occasion, we got two _loud_ backfires and the engine quit.

We have a very occasional 2111 error - swapped RPM and timing
sensors - no difference.

On starting, it acts like sometimes there is compression, sometimes
there isn't...

Phil, what was that oil pressure problem you saw?

Any ideas?
