Rack boot replacement

I just noticed that the boot on my rack is torn at one of the ends (making
it almost non visible). Anyway, I remember a long time ago someone
speaking of a split boot or an R&R procedure to avoid removing the rack to
replace the boot. Anyone knows? Any BTDT's? I do have a good rack from my
old car, but would like to avoid having to put it in.
