... well it turns out that that is more or less what the WGFV that came
stock with your MC does ... and with the QLCC modified chip the boost is
applied to the top of the WG even longer to allow the higher max boost
levels without having to even replace the WG spring. I believe that Scott
M. recommends that a stiffer WG spring be used in any case to keep the WG
from opening until the boost pressure arrives.
>From the posts I have read here in the past day or so on the aftermarket
boost controllers (i.e. all of the info I know about them) it sounds as
though they replumb the pressure to the bottom of the WG to be placed under
the control of the WGFV (isn't this how the 3B operates?). It would take a
bit more hacking around in the ECU code, but it seems to me to be completely
possible to replace the WGFV with something that has better dynamic
characteristics and the code modified to apply boost to the bottom of the WG
only when approaching max boost. The cool thing about this from my point of
view is that if the ECU detects knock it could apply boost to the WG to get
it to open immediately. One possible downside is that it seems to me you
would like to be able to have an analog control of the boost pressure to the
WG so that you could keep a controlled amount of exhaust passing by the
turbo's turbine wheel ...
The big problem I see is trying to get such a mod past the smog nazis ... I
had to talk until I was blue in the mouth to get my STOCK QTC to pass simply
because there was nothing connected to the nipple on the top of the WG! Are
the aftermarket boost controllers CARB approved?
