This seems to be fashion- rather than legislation-driven. In the '80s,
black taillights were fashionable. Then came the early '90s, and eveyone
went for the greyish/red look. Audi now seems to think that we like all-red
lights (yes, we get 'em in Europe, too). In general, I like the all-red
items, as Audi manages to make them light up in amber (or orange, whatever
you choose to call it). They used to do this by putting tiny red stripes
over an orange plastic lens to make it appear red whan switched off-
nowadays, there's an orange filter over the bulb, and the lens is clear
with a red 'mask' over it. No visible change in colour or intensity when
compared to 'early' European A4s. In fact, if they did a similar thing to
the reversing lights, I'd like it even better.
