found a '86 4k quattro for sale.
I discovered a '86 4000 quattro for sale the other day and I'm looking to
see if it is a good deal or not. I drove it yesterday and here are a few
details about the car.
1) Something with exhaust system has "come lose" and needs to be rewelded
together. Needless to say the car was pretty loud when I drove it. I would
make the current owner fix this first.
2) A medium sized dent on the front left fender. Nothing too major, possibly
could be popped out without having to repaint. Some visable rust on the
rear quarter panels, but it didn't look like anything major. Some other
small dings, overall the paint was still nice and in good condition (it was
red)
3) The odometer reads 166,999, but it doesn't work. According to the owner,
it probably doesn't have more than 1000 more miles than that. I'm going to
say 170k to be safe.
4) The left rear window doesn't rool down (power). All other windows roll
down, but not by the main control switch in the console.
5) The interior is in good condition. No cracks, tears, stains, etc. The
seats look good, the headliner is OK, the carpet looks good. All the switchs
seem to be in order. Would have to find out if all the interior lights work,
etc. The sunroof works.
6) Overall the car drove pretty good, seemed to have decent power, the
clutch seemed OK, it shifted fine. It did seem to pull to the right a
little.
7) Some of the black exterior window moldings have begun to chip away and
show the chrome under it. Some have also warped.
8) One headlight has some rock chips in it and has turned yellow from
mosture getting in. But the light does work. Havn't really checked out the
other lights.
9) The owner says he has most of the records and reciepts for the car. He
thinks (it was his moms car) that the timing belt, and a few other engine
parts have been replaced at some point in time. I will look over those
records to see when. The battery looks pretty old, and the engine
compartment is pretty dirty, but nothing looked out of place.
10)The right side mirror is gone. The mirror assembly is there, just the
mirror itself is gone. What are the costs of something like that.
That is all I can think of right now. The asking price is $2100, I was
thinking of offering $1800 or so. I would definatly have it checked out by a
mechanic first. But if this sounds like it would take too much work to fix
the "little" stuff, then I may pass on it. Any advice would be very
appreciated.
