weird screeching noise update

Thanks for the replies.

I, too, was most worried about something in the timing, so I did check the
marks on the cam gear and flywheel--still aligned, and the t-belt has good
tension.  Whew.

I think the noise is from the distributor cap and rotor being out of whack.
This could also cause the no-start.  I'll be looking at the cap and rotor more
today.

I'm also still going over the hoses, wiring, sensors, etc. to track down the
bugger causing the no-start and the error codes.  What a beastly process.
