Blitzkrieg (Lightning War) was the doctrine, developed by Guderian, to
punch through opposition lines by fast-moving and deeply penetrating
concentrated attacks of armored units, supported by mounted infantry and
close-air attacks.  The term was actually coined by an American jounalist
(Shirer?) late '39/early '40.  Worked quite well, for a time.  Had nothing
real specific to do with civilians.  Unfortuantely, we Amis & Brits did a
much better job of targeting cilvilians (from the air).  The term
"collateral damage" was unknown in that era.

You know, I did feel really, really weird walking out of "Saving Private
Ryan" and climbing into the q.....
