The plug is the same on all VW/Audi transmissions. I just had the same
problem with the rear dif on my 4kq. It finally came out (I had a pro
helping me out) by attaching a big vice grip to the outside of the plug
(yes, it ruined the threads) and a 17mm allen socket on a half inch drive.

Line them up and turn. Believe it or not, having the plug crushed down on
the wrench allows you to put a lot more torque on it w/o stripping or
rounding out.

The plug was ruined, but I scavenged one out of a blown tranny laying
around (case was still good, useful for a self-machined 16v Volkswagen).
