I'd imagine that you could easily add one. It seems that all of the timer
stuff is right in the switch. (I know this because I once had the switch
replaced in my 1993 90; they used the wrong part #, and no more timer.)

You should just be able to buy the newer defroster switch, pop it in, and
voila! Of course, you'll end up paying through the nose at the dealer :-)
