Ah so!  That's pretty worn out!  I don't think conventional plugs would 
have fared so well.

The spark was probably travelling along carbon traces up the hole to the 
gap.  A regular plug would have a larger air gap from the same type of 
wear, IMO.  (mandatory shrug of ignorance)
