Key words "burned down into".

When new the platinum core is level with the insulator, after three years the
platinum core was burned out below the level of the ceramic insulator so that
you could no longer see it in normal daylight. If I had taken the time to move
the side electrode out of the way and looked down in the hole, I probably
would have seen the remnant of the electrode, but at that point in time all I
cared about was that the truck was starting again and running smooth.
