Re: 5ktq brakes

Yes, George, these cars do have a "bomb". If the brake warning light
flashes during braking it can be a sign that the brake hydraulic boost
pressure is low (bad bomb) or that the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir is
low.
Check the fluid level - the reservoir is on the firewall, left hand
side. The standard bomb test is to start the car and let run for a few
minutes. Shut off the car and turn the ignition switch to "on" so that the
warning lights are lit. Pump the brakes until the brake warning light comes
on. You should get at least 10 brake applications - 20 is ideal. Any less,
and the bomb pressure is too low - time for a new one.
The brake pedal pulse you feel as the car comes to a stop is probably
the ABS system activating. It has sensed that one or more wheels has stopped
while the car is still moving and activated the ABS, which is felt as a
pulsing in the pedal. This is probably a wheel speed sensor out of
adjustment, but could be a bad sensor or a corroded reluctor on the hub.
The manifold readings you quote are typical. The actual pressure for the
stock MC-1 engine at full boost should be 1.4 bar, but the in-dash guage is
often unreliable. What does it read with the engine off but the ignition on?
It should read 1 bar (atmospheric pressure unless you are in Denver, but
let's not get into that).
