On many European cars there is a single red light along side the brake
lights which lights up only when you turn on your fog lights.  I think it is
on the left side but am not sure.  The light is constant and brighter than a
brake light or a running light.  The logic behind this feature is that if it
is really foggy it is difficult not only to see the road but also cars in
front of you.  The rear fog light allows cars behind you to visually pick
you up earlier.
