Actually, I may have given Orin credit for one of Scott's innovations ...
Anyway - it's just a diode check light connected across the terminals
that drive the wastegate frequency valve. The ECU actively modulates
this valve under 'wide open throttle' - a diode connected across the
terminals flickers as soon as WOT engages.
With experience, other things can be seen. When the flicker dies at
high output, a shimmed or resprung wastegate can be suspected.
If you attach a pressure gauge to the line between the wastegate
frequency valve and the top chamber of the wastegate, it damn near
shakes itself to bits at WOT.
Until I saw the flickering of the diode light and the blur that had
previously been the boost gauge needle, I had no idea that such servo
mechanisms were used on Audis.
