Heater Control

Just a couple of questions, I am new to the list and have had my 1988 90
Quattro for less than a month.
What is a ur-Quattro?
I have a problem with the temp control that operates the flap that is supose
to stop the heated air from coming out the vents when turned all the way CCW.
It does not close all the way, plenty of heat, but a little warm air still
gets through when truned for the A/C. Since witner is coming, it is not
critical to get max A/C right now, but it will need to be fixed come Spring. I
have had the center console apart enough to know that the flap is almost
inaccessible. I know it is not the cable or the rotary knob. Something is just
blocking the flap itself. Instead of completely tearing down the console and
heater I had considered installing a simple cable operated heater control
valve. One that goes on the heater hose that is the supply line to the heater
core. Would that compromise the engine cooling? I know it would be less work
than tearing the car apart to expose the heater box, and provide complete shut
down of the heat to the pasenger compartment.
Thanks in advance.
