When I took over John Robinson's 1986 Passat with 112000 miles, he'd
owned it from 8000. During my first or second foray under the bonnet,
I discovered that the vacuum control circuit had a leak. I traced this
to the vacuum advance unit on the distributor, which had as good as no
diaphragm. I fixed it, and the upshift light started working again.
So I asked John how long the upshift light had been broken.
"What upshift light?"
He'd driven without vacuum advance for over ten years.
