86 5kcstq strange noise

My 86 5kcstq has a funny sound in it.  It sounds like it is in the
transmission.  It is kind of a scraping sound, like a piece of sheet metal
hitting on the driveline.  Yes checked for that.  You can hear it when you
are stopped just sitting and it will get louder as your speed increases.
It's increases seems to be liner and not related to which gear you are in ,
just speed.  It is never really that loud and I guess could be just normal
drivetrain noise having never owned a quattro before, but it is louder than
the drivetrain in my 86 coupe and 85 5000ks.  Also the noise will complete
disappear when you are sitting with the clutch in.  I am suspecting a
throwout bearing or something like that, please tell me I am wrong.
