Re: 86 5kcstq strange noise
Mark -
You've probably already heard from the same people I heard from when I
got that sound. Mine was more like little loose bits of metal bouncing
around in the clutch. Yes, it probably is the throw-out bearing or its
sleeve. On mine, the sleeve actually sheared off its flange.
At any rate, it is very likely that you'll need a new clutch very soon.
After the sound started, my clutch generally wouldn't disengage except
every once in a while. It happened in June while I was driving across
the country, so I got stuck in Albuquerque for four or five days.
Hopefully you're near home.
When you have the clutch replaced (assuming that's it), be sure to
replace all the clutch stuff (tob, pilot bearing, tob sleeve, plus the
set of plates) and also the rear main seal and anything else that's not
very expensive. Clutch slave cylinder and hose would be a very good idea
at this time, since they're rather difficult to get to otherwise.
Also don't be surprised if something else, like the slave or master or
the clutch pedal, breaks very soon. My clutch pedal broke a week later
(it's really not that uncommon). It must have been weakened as the
clutch was dying, which meant that it took a lot of force to push down
the pedal. The new clutch is very light, as it should be.
Good luck!
