Still switching after all these years
I rigged up the VW 1115-style test LED today on the wastegate frequency
valve, as detailed nicely in Scott Mockry's pages (and a little less
nicely in the Bentley). After limited testing, I haven't seen any
failures of the throttle switch (the WOT portion, specifically), at
least not yet. I know that they are infamous for intermittent behavior,
so I'll leave the LED hooked up for a while and keep an eye on it.
And the switch is almost gauranteed to be original; if the CPO (clueless
previous owner) didn't replace the multi-function thermoswitch when the
temp gauge was always showing dead cold, I don't think she would've
gotten the throttle switch replaced because of less spirited
performance.
It's really neat to watch what the ECU's doing on that frequency valve.
I understand that you should expect a high duty cycle when you first
reach WOT, with a decreasing duty cycle over time (to zero if you're on
it long enough to create that much pressure?). What else can I watch for
and learn about or diagnose from the test LED?
Thanks. This is fun--a lot more fun than, say, changing the steering
rack was last weekend.
