Gonna change my oil today - suggestions?

Now that the cold weather is here, oil pressure guage is doing funny things.
Think I need a lighter grade oil. When cold, guage is pegged at idle. When
warm, pressure is lower than I think it should be. Oil was changes a couple
thousand miles ago, but summer temps were warm then. Any suggestions on brand
/ grade for NYC area winter. Could my filter be the culprit? Any suggestions
