Re: PROLONG Oil additive. Good, Bad, Comments?

Hi!

Hope this doesn't turn into the 2nd edition of the Prolong
thread that popped-up a few months ago.

Anyway, the stuff is snake oil. For one, they never tell
you which laboratory tested the stuff. It always says
"tested by a reputable lab". If the stuff was so good then
I'm sure a lab who did all the hard work on testing the
stuff would be glad to indicate that the stuff does what
it says. But I've never seen a lab name in the TV ads or
magazine ads.

As for running the motor with no oil, the story is that at
some bike rally some other snake oil manufacturer was
doing the demo of draining the oil and running the engine
for lots of hours when a engine manufacturer saw this and
got one of their own untreated engines (no snake oil stuff)
and also drained the oil and let it run. The untreated motor
ran just as long without oil as the other engine, and also
showed less wear and tear compared to the treated engine.
Funny, that.

Actually, I've only ever seen one place that lists the lab
facility, but I've never seen the stuff advertised on TV or
in magazines. "Microlon"? Anyone heard of it? EPA tested
metal treatment. The address is http://www.microlon.com/ .
It's some sort of dry flim lubricant.

Don't know if I'd add this stuff to Mobil 1 either. What is
dry film lubricant anyway? Does this mean being applied to
the metal in perhaps an engine re-assembly process where
the parts are dipped in the stuff? Hey, what do I know?

Oh well, I'm turning into an animal rights supporter due to
a good friend's influences, so I have to state that I, on
principle, would never use snake oil in my car. Poor beasts.
Besides, the last thing you need is an unchecked fang
getting caught in a seal somewhere.

G.
