to the best Audi techs

Hello group. I need your help. I am currently trying to fix my son's
girlfriend's 1989 Audi 90. It will go down the road fine until it hick-ups
once or twice. Then it will loose power. If shifted into neutral at this
time, it will start to diesel until it finally dies. It may or may not
restart instantly. When it does restart , it completely recovers until the
next incident. If you let it idle long enough, it will eventually do the
same thing. The fuel filter is new. The fuel pump relay can be bypassed
with no difference. The pump does not seem
to be any nosier than any I have heard before. It has good spark when it
won't start. Any ideas?. Thanks for your collective help. Barry
