Alloy heads _can_ be repaired, but I think the heating technique uses
RF energy and it's quite a big rig.  Definitely a "take the part to the
rig" job, rather than the other way round.

Is there a chance it's an old wound?

If you put on an exchange head, you basically renew 70% of the engine.
It's a big $$$ hit, but it really does make a difference.  I discovered
the other day that I didn't pay as much for the exchange head on my
ur-quattro as I said I had - GBP469, in fact.  At today's exchange rate
$782.
