Re: F40 on freeway and Audi's

In a message dated 10/28/98 wdonley@slonet.org (Bill Donley)writes:

<< You know, for all the F-40 talk, the first inkling I had to have a Quattro,
was at Laguna Seca, seeing Hans Stuck get blown off by everything{including
the F-40} on the straights, then repass them on impossible lines in the
curves. >>

My first inkling was a few years before that actualy but I was there in
October 1989 as well. (Along with Long Beach and Sears Point the year before
for that increadible 1988 Trans-Am season.) My recollection is slightly
different though. I would not say that the IMSA GTO 90q was "blown off"
anywhere. While the Cougar and F-40 were faster on the straights, Hans Stuck
took pole in the most increadible qualifying dual with Jean Alesi driving the
Ferrari. Pole IMO is not "blown off." Perhaps he was somewhat slower down the
straights...but to get pole, one must be fast pretty much everywhere.

On a humurous note, Hans Stuck's 90q had a doll hanging in the back of the car
on a hang-man's noose (get it? doll-in-back?) and I recall the Roush Couger
had something equaly "cute" appearing on the car.

A few years later Hans Stuck was back to Laguna Seca in the Bridgestone Super
Car series driving a Brumos Porsche (Hurley Haywood once again team-mate) and
his driver's suit was hanging from a wire in the paddock. The wind blew the
driver's suit out of reach and there was Hurley laughing at "Stuckie" about
how he was going to get the driver's suit down--had to be there I guess.

<< There was a great banner on the hill up the Corkscrew. It read "Hans Stuck
to the road!". I've got photos here somewhere. If I can find'em, I'll get
them scanned and posted somewhere. >>

I do not have any pictures of the banner, I do have quite a number of shots
from those two seasons. Someday I will get scnas done and be looking for a
site to post them on then. Let us know where your pictures end up.

<< BTW, the 5kcstq showed a bimmer the right way to drive Carmel Valley Road
from L.Seca this weekend. Done itself proud. Tight , gravelley roads, and awd.
What a concept.........Bill D. >>

Nice job Bill. Was a great weekend too, despite the rain Saturday.
