Has he checked the blower fuse, and the fusebox?

Sounds like either the blower motor or the fuse/fuse box.
Next time it's dead, pull sill cover off and give the
heater box a good whack to see if the fan comes on. Or,
you can pull the rubber grommet off the heater box and
push in on the blower motor brushes. If the blower comes
to life, you need a new blower motor. Pushing in on the
brushes gave my blower an extra few months of life before
it became terminal.
I had the same symptoms in the 5KS, pulled all the fuses
and found one of them melted, but still making occasional
contact. This happened twice, the second time the fuse
melted into the fuse holder. Changed the fusebox (got one
from a lister) and haven't had a problem since.
The fusebox is in a LOUSY location on the 5KS, attracting
humidity, leaves, etc. and the buses inside it start to
corrode making intermittent contact which causes electrical
gremlins. Seems like the early Audi electrical systems
were designed during Octoberfest.
