Re: Ignorant question on 80 vs. 90 models

The 80 and 90 are virtually the same car. They share the same shell and
componentry. The 80 was the "base" model and the 90 was the "luxury"
model. The 90 had leather, 80 had cloth. The 80 had a 4 cylinder, the 90
had a 5 cylinder. Quattro used 5 cyl. on both. The 90 had ABS standard,
the 80 had it an an option (quattro only?). The 90q had a neat trunk wing,
the 80q had a trunk lip.

Production started in 88, the 80 was discontinued at some point, maybe 91.
The 90 continued on and is now the A4. As for reliability and price, newer
is better but we already knew that. An 88 90q goes in the 3k-4k range,
depending on condition. Expect 150K miles or so.

Mine has 140K, was 8/10s body and mechanical, extensive service history,
virtually everything I would have done to the car once buying it had been
done in the last year and was $3000. It was a nice deal. traderonline.com
will give a good benchmark for pricing various models and years.
