RE: headligt relay 9007's
Ok, john, well I did this on my '86 4kq and noticed a difference
First I went out and bought wire 12Gauge, zip tie, male and female connectors,
and 30 amp circuit breaker, also two 30amp bosch fan relays. now comes the
fun part. Wiring if I confuse you, write me back and I will try to clear
anything up. Ok, First you have to Know how a relay works.
BTW, I had the bosch relays saved from the wrecking yard, do not spend
big bucks on these, they are just a standard 4 prong 30AMP relay.
The 30 terminal is battery power, the 87 term is the switched batt power.
I believe there was also a 25 term which you take your low beam powerfrom the
switch and connect to this. The 26 term is ground.
OK, I connected the 30 terminal to the circuit breaker, then connected the
circuit breaker to the + battery connection.
the Autocheck to work correctly on the 5k's you would have to relay each
Connect the wire that used to be on the low beam to the 25 term. (h/l
switch power)
Connect the 26 term to ground.
I would also take to old ground wire and ground it to the battery.
But now, you have at least one low beam hooked up, copy that to the other
it should work great.
I connected ths 87 term to both low beams but if you really wanted
the Autocheck to work correctly on the 5k's you would have to relay each
low beam individually. (2relays for lows, 2 for highs)
BTW< I would recommend at least having a test light to do this if not volt
meter. I measured 11-12.5V before and 13.2-13.8 afterwords.
Now, 9004 to 9007 requires the use of a dremels tool or removal of the
reflector assembly. the grooves on the 9007 bulbs are not the same
as 9004's so they will not fit unless you widen these grooves or grind off
the tabs in the reflector. I chose to grind the bulb because I had limited
time but plan on taking the reflector out later and taking the tabs off.
after this is done, swap the low beam wire and the ground wire on the connector
and voila! you now have 9007's. Not very hard IMHO.
