Winter Tires, are they really needed?

On my '98 30v A4 I currently have the stock 205/55ZR16 Dunlop SP8000s and
was wondering how good they are in the snow. I live in Maryland and at the
bottom of a very steep hill. If snow tires are needed anyone have
recomendations? I know this has been discussed before but at that time I
wasn't really paying attention(stupid me).
