The audi gods must be smiling upon you, Phil.  Once I was changing a
camshaft and forgot to put the engine at TDC before starting.  According
to the Bentley, there is a mark in the harmonic balancer (pulley) that
references to an alumin(i)um bracket in front of the engine.  This mark
was no where near TDC on my car.  Had to turn the engine by hand until I
was close to TDC and finally zeroed in on the flywheel mark.  Only then
could I put the new cam back in and loosely set the distributor timing. 
Could be sloppy work done by the previous owner, or could be sloppy work
from the factory.
