Don't trust the TDC mark on the crank! Make sure you double check
looking into the #1 piston and the oil filler cap (valves should be
closed, lobes pointing up). In my car (and I'm sure many more) the
crank TDC mark isn't accurate. I don't know if the PO disassembled the
damper and reassembled it incorrectly or what, but it sure isn't TDC.
You can put a 12" socket extension into the spark plug hole and move the
crank by hand slowly until the extension is at the highest point with
the valves closed to be absolutely sure of TDC.
