Winter tires should last you at least two years.
The cost is negligible in terms of safety - with the
kind of driving you do, I'm sure you want to head for
the hills as soon as that big storm starts, you know, 
the one that is keeping the people with all season
tires at home :)

Seriously, a set of cheap alloys or steel rims and snows
can be had for around $250-300 or more if you care about
looks.  It's well worth it, IF we get a lot of snow.
