When I bought my 86 5 KS for $400, it, too had a thrown rod. You could see
through both sides of the block - but it started and ran! Not well, and
lots of noise, but you could move the car under it's own power.
I think in this case, someone deliberately set out to break it, as in place
a brick on the gas pedal and see what happens.
But you're right - I-5 bottom ends seem to be virtually immortal.
