back-up lights constantly on

while i was out looking at possible vacuum leaks and the condition of the
intake hose, i noticed that my backup lights are stuck turned on.  i
disconnected the wires for the time being so i can drive without blinding the
guy driving behind me with these night-blasters.  has this ever happened to
any of you, and is there a specific place i should check?  it is a bilateral
problem (they are both on, not just one side)  thanks again for your most
helpful ideas.
