I'm not sure why they don't recomend that combination, we use it 
exclusively on all the rally car suspensions I build & have never had 
any problems. The shaft diameter does not present a problem-it is still 
smaller than the strut body diameter. I like the Bilsteins because they 
offer a revalving service as well as rebuilds for a very reasonable 
price. We just installed a set of their coilovers on a 4KQ w/ spax 
struts which worked well, but the spax were not a gas strut so I'm not 
sure how they will work when pushed hard.
