I tried a baseball bat with my 82 coupe.  While it did give me some
extra space, it dented and cracked the paint pretty bad, and that area
(wheel well) is a bad place for rust.  I think the best thing is to cut
the fender pull it out, bondo or weld steel there then paint it.  Do it
right the first time then put the fattest tires you can on it!  You
could do it yourself, and if you butcher it up, send it to the
professional, or buy a plastic wheel arch kit to cover your mistakes.
