The fuel pump on the 44-chassis cars (like Aleksander's) is different from
your 80's in that it's in the fuel tank, not under the car.
Replacing the fuel pump on an 80 or 90 is a job anyone can do- all it takes
is some basic tools, some common sense and a few hours (at the most).
I did it myself- got a few very good tips from fellow listers (which I've
saved, for anyone who'd want to to this himself, too) and did the job in
two hours including a few other things while I was there. It wasn't
particularly hard, even if you're an average mechanic like I am (used to
small jobs).
A 'nice' repair to get you started fixing Audis.

BTW It's been about three months, and my pump's starting to get noisy
again, too.
